Dog Traits

Bloodhound
Loving – Level 5 – Row 1
You have an even more loving relationship with your dog, which increases its overall BOND.
This is a decent trait, as it makes the dog more willing to work.
Shortcut – Level 5 – Row 2
Your dog can skip detour tracks in favor of more recent clues.
This is an excellent trait, as it will shave off a lot of tracking time
6th Sense – Level 10 – Row 1
Your dog has a higher chance of sensing when an animal is about to be spooked.
This is nice, but it’s not needed. If you are watching what you’re doing the dog will still do this in plenty of time to warn you.
Nosy – Level 10 – Row 2
Increases the distance at which your dog can find a blood clue.
This is excellent, and really helps with finding blood trails.
Howl – Level 15 – Row 1
Your dog will howl like a wolf on command.
Absolutely useless. It doesn’t do anything but waste a skill point.
Nosier – Level 15 – Row 2
Your dog is better at picking up the scent from smaller blood clues.
This is excellent, and helps in tracking tremendously.
Sharp – Level 20 – Row 1
Your dog is naturally more willing to work and has increased FOCUS.
This is great as it actually makes the dog more willing to work longer, and helps it to find tracks easier.
Spotted – Level 20 – Row 2
Your dog has a chance to highlight the wounded animal you are tracking.
This would be ok if you are tracking wounded animals a lot. It’s best to take Sharp and learn how to take proper shots though.
Close – Level 25 – Row 1
Your dog has a higher chance of staying close to you.
I find the bloodhound crowds me too much as is. Sometimes I need more space instead of less. This could be useful if the dog would stay behind you.
Poop-Dar – Level 25 – Row 2
Your dog has a higher chance to find fresh droppings when idle.
This is good if you are having trouble finding something you’ve recently lost sight of. However, the dog usually doesn’t get poop from the animal you are tracking. I still think this is the better trait of this level though.
Brave – Level 30 – Row 1
Your dog has a chance to ward off predator attacks.
Absolutely amazing for saving your life around wolves, bears, bison, buffalo, and lions.
Master Tracker – Level 30 – Row 2
Your dog has a small chance to find the harvest without needing to follow the trail.
Great for tracking down kills.
Labrador Retriever
Loving – Level 5 – Row 1
You have an even more loving relationship with your dog, which increases its overall BOND.
This is a decent trait, as it makes the dog more willing to work.
Strong – Level 5 – Row 2
Your dog is less burdened by carrying harvests.
This is a must, because it means your dog can keep going back out and bringing back downed animals. Without this the dog will just stop and have to wait a bit before it will do more.
6th Sense – Level 10 – Row 1
Your dog has a higher chance of sensing when an animal is about to be spooked.
This is nice, but it’s not needed. If you are watching what you’re doing the dog will still do this in plenty of time to warn you. With that being said this is the best one to pick.
Quiver – Level 10 – Row 2
Your dog is able to fetch arrows that it can reach (Only works with Recycle Perk)
Unless you are actively hunting class 1 animals with bows this is useless. I would not recommend class 1 bow hunting either.
Howl – Level 15 – Row 1
Your dog will howl like a wolf on command.
Absolutely useless. It doesn’t do anything but waste a skill point. Whistle if you want to spook birds off.
Bold – Level 15 – Row 2
Your dog will run further away in its search for something to retrieve.
Absolutely a must have. Your dog has a small distance only it will search if you don’t choose this.
Sharp – Level 20 – Row 1
Your dog is naturally more willing to work and has increased FOCUS.
This is great as it actually makes the dog more willing to work longer, and helps it to find tracks easier.
Control – Level 20 – Row 2
If idle, your dog will go into heel position when you your weapon.
For me this is useless. Just make the dog lay down before you start firing.
Close – Level 25 – Row 1
Your dog has a higher chance of staying close to you.
With the Retriever this isn’t actually that bad. The dog will stay closer to you and play less.
Webbed Paws – Level 25 – Row 2
Your dog swims faster.
This is awesome, because the dog is very slow in water to start with. This makes it much faster in water.
Brave – Level 30 – Row 1
Your dog has a chance to ward off predator attacks.
This is a great skill, but for the Retriever it is not really needed. Hunt from a stand if you are worried about getting attacked.
Retriever – Level 30 – Row 2
Your dog retrieves at longer distances and is less burdened by carrying harvests.
This is an absolute must for the Retriever.
